Fattah Presents Philadelphia Siblings with Courage Award

The youngsters who fought off a would-be abductor.

WASHINGTON, May 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), presented the Courage Award to two Philadelphia children today at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's (NCMEC) 18th Annual Congressional Recognition program.

The 10-year-old girl and her 2-year-old brother received the NCMEC's Courage Award for their extraordinary bravery in the face of danger. Last summer, the children were walking along a Philadelphia street when a man suddenly came from behind, grabbed the girl and tried to drag her into his car.  She fought - kicking and yelling - until the would-be abductor, frustrated by both children's screams, let her go. Police credit the children's ultimate escape to their defensive behavior in fighting off the man.

In presenting the award, Fattah said, "Your bravery stands out today for everyone to see.  And it lets other kids know that they have a right to say no, to yell and ask for help when in danger. You're an inspiration for us all and we're very glad you're safe."

Congressman Fattah is the Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies (CJS) which oversees funding for the NCMEC through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention at the Justice Department.  The work of the NCMEC reflects the Congressman's career focus to improve the life chances of children and working families.

On average, some 2,185 children go missing in America every day.

ADVISORY: Fattah Speaks to Major Science and Policy Leaders on Federal Investment in Research

WASHINGTON, May 2, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Fattah (D-PA), the lead Democratic Appropriator for science, research and technology, will be the main speaker Friday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual Science and Technology Policy Forum in Washington, DC.

Congressman Fattah will speak on the current policy issues affecting researchers and their institutions and what impact the issues have on the federal budget. The Forum is widely viewed as the major public meeting in the United States on Science and Technology policy issues.  The nation's top major science policy leaders, including government and industry officials, university faculty and administrators, diplomats and others interested in public policies affecting science and technology will be in attendance.

The Pennsylvania Representative will also update the audience on the Fattah Neuroscience Initiative which is designed to make game-changing progress in the understanding of and therapies for brain development, cognition, disease and injury. The initiative also calls for developing public-private partnerships in brain science research.
